Can I use a MacBook Air with an Ultrawide monitor

Have an office with a number of M1 and M2 MacBook Air devices. They're asking for dual external monitors but as there seems to be no really stable options for that, I am instead looking at exchanging their 16:9 monitors with either 21:9 or 32:9 Ultrawide monitors. Are those types of monitors supported on M1 and M2 MacBook Air laptops?

Thanks.

Short answer: yes ...

Longer answer: ... but with some important considerations to ensure compatibility:

  • The M1/M2 MacBook Airs officially support one external display with a resolution of 6K at 60Hz. 21:9 & 32.9 ultrawide monitors are within these parameters. Most ultrawides run at 60Hz, but higher refresh rates (i.e., 120Hz+) may need scaling back to 60Hz for compatibility.
  • Use the correct USB-C to DisplayPort 1.4 or USB-C to HDMI 2.0/2.1 adapters/cables to connect to these types of monitors. For HDMI, ensure the monitor and adapter both support HDMI 2.0 or higher for full resolution and refresh rate.
