Can't export video in iMovie

I can't export my video named 'My Movie' although there's no corrupted videos. I've waited like 5 minutes and more, but it still stucks in 9m. I've reseted iMovie app, restarted my MacBook Air many times, but it seemed to have no changes. Also this is my MacBook Air's storage. What's the problem here? Please respond to me as soon as possible. Thanks.

Why Is iMovie Stuck?

This happens when your Mac or iMovie runs into trouble with storage, corrupted files, or overloading due to high-quality export settings. Basically, iMovie is saying, “I can’t handle this right now!” Let’s sort this out.

Step-by-Step Solution

1. Free Up Storage (This Is Crucial!)

When exporting a video, iMovie creates temporary files that can take up A LOT of space. If your Mac’s storage is almost full, the export will stall.

Here’s how to free up storage:

  • Go to the Apple Menu > About This Mac > Storage.
  • If your storage bar is nearly full, delete:
    • Old files you don’t need.
    • Large videos or downloads (move them to iCloud or an external drive).
    • Empty the Trash (right-click the Trash icon > Empty Trash).
  • Aim for at least 10–20GB of free space before exporting.

2. Adjust Export Settings

Sometimes iMovie struggles with high-quality settings. To lighten the load:

  1. Click File > Share > File.
  2. Choose a lower resolution like 1080p or 720p instead of 4K.
  3. Set Quality to "High" or "Medium" instead of "Best."

3. Check for Corrupted Clips

A single problematic video, photo, or effect can block the export process. To find it:

  1. Make a duplicate of your project (right-click the project > Duplicate Project).
  2. Delete sections of your video one at a time and try exporting after each deletion.
    • If one part causes the export to fail, re-import or replace those clips.
  1. Pay attention to:
    • Videos with weird file formats.
    • Effects or transitions added just before the 9-minute mark.

4. Clear iMovie’s Render Files

Render files are temporary files that iMovie creates during editing. If they get corrupted or bloated, they can cause issues. Here’s how to clear them:

  1. Open iMovie.
  2. Go to iMovie Preferences > Delete Render Files.
  3. Restart iMovie and try exporting again.

5. Reset iMovie Preferences

Sometimes iMovie settings can get stuck in a loop. Resetting preferences gives it a fresh start.

  1. Quit iMovie.
  2. Hold Option + Command while reopening iMovie.
  3. A pop-up will appear asking if you want to reset preferences—click Reset.

6. Export in Smaller Chunks

If your video is long, iMovie might struggle to handle the entire project in one go. Split it into smaller sections:

  1. In the timeline, right-click where you want to split > Split Clip.
  2. Export each part separately, then combine them later using iMovie or another editor.

What to Do Next?

  1. Try the steps above (start with clearing storage and checking for corrupted clips).
  2. If the problem persists, ensure your macOS and iMovie are fully updated.
  3. Still stuck? Consider contacting Apple Support—they can help troubleshoot deeper system issues.
