Messages not syncing between iPhone and MacBook

Using iCloud to supposedly sync Messages between iPhone and Macbook.

However, sync needs to be done manually even though both devices have sync turned on and are running with good network connectivity.

This seems to be a known issue.

Anyone know when and how this will be fixed?
