Separating Apple Accounts for Family Sharing and locating devices

after years of sharing one Apple ID i have created my own and am now trying to untangle the mess that has resulted in having to create a new email address for myself. The new email address, seldom used, now it appears as my primary address. I have tried to work around things through Apples “family” feature but after a few starts and do-overs I am now blocked from using family sharing for one year. My main problem is that i must be able to use Find Me to locate his devices and him….he is just on still-safe side of age related dementia and is easily lost…

Should I just abandon the idea of separate Apple IDs and use our common ID on all devices: 2 watches, 2 phones, 2 iPads. OR is there a workaround on the year ban.

At this point I feel I made a mistake in heeding warnings about two people/one Apple ID

thanks for any thoughtsu
