How can I disable icons in the Mail app on iOS 18.3?

Updated to the new iOS 18.3 and just opened Mail, to be visually assaulted by a new look with tags and email icons. Look I appreciate having the sorting options. But, I would prefer having the option to turn this off. I was able to bring it back to a list view in the preferences, but I can’t get rid of the icons next to each email, that are now taking up screen space. I have the largest sized iPhone for a reason. So I can enlarge my text to a size I’m able to read with my old man eyes. The icons now truncate the amount of text visible in the preview. I don’t need icons I need to know if I have to read the email now or later. Please fix this or give me a solve.

You have the option to make the mail look exactly as it did before the update.

  • For sorting, open the Mail app, tap the circle with three dots in it and tap List View
  • For the icons, open the Settings App, scan all the way down the page to Apps, tap that then look for Mail and tap that. Turn off Show Contact Photos.

Your mail will now look exactly as it did.

I just updated to iOS 18.4 on my iPhone and all other devices. And the contact posters are still not appearing as I had turned them off when this feature first came out.

Are you doing this exactly:

  • Open Settings App
  • Go all the way down to and tap Apps
  • Find and tap Mail
  • Look for and TURN OFF Show Contact Posters

I turned off Show Contact Photos and my mail inbox looks nice and clean like it used to, thank you!…But when I open one individual mail item, I still have those annoying icons next to the sender at the top of each email! Any idea how to make those go away? I hate them, they are visually annoying! (See example in this screen shot)

Horrible? No. Different? Yes. As with changes which come along year after year, we have to retrain ourselves, then we wonder how we managed to get along before the new formats came out. Just give yourself time to adjust and learn how the new mail app works.

Same here- I am a senior that needs to see my screen. With these icons all the email is truncated! Made mail functionally difficult to read and use. Switch it back, please!!!!

Appreciate your answer regarding the icons but I can’t stand the small blue dots designating new mail. I want to go back to bolding. Can I?

No, you can't go back to however you thought the unread dots looked before. I honestly don't remember them looking different than they do now under iOS 18.3. So, I did a google search and found this article from December, 2023, which shows the blue dot was exactly as it is now in 2023. People often remember things which might not have been.
