Can I buy a previous version of Microsoft Word cheaper for my MacBook Air?

Microsoft has expired. I only need Word. I believe i last purchased the MS package at Apple. Can i get a cheaper version than the $159 they're asking for? Using Macbook Air Sequoia 15.1

If you could still singularly purchase MS Word, it would likely cost almost as much as the Office suite. I see for a limited time, you can get Office 2024 Home and Student for $129.97 at StackSocial. You can perform a custom installation that only installs Word. This is where I got my Office 2021 Home and Business for $34 two years ago.

You already have the Microsoft free Web apps link from Servant of Cats.

If you are sharing Word documents with other Word users, I would not recommend using Apple's free Pages application as it may introduce content issues for Word document recipients. Word documents with equations exported from Pages drop those equations when the Word document is opened in LibreOffice, but not in MS Word.

If you are accustomed to using MS Word, then you will find that the free LibreOffice is largely compatible with your existing documents, but the user interface and learning curve will be steep, even with the well-written LibreOffice documentation for support.

Microsoft – Microsoft 365

If you want to stick with Microsoft Word, it looks like your choices are

  • To rent ("subscribe to") Microsoft 365 starting at $9.99/month or $99.99/year
  • To buy Office Home 2024 – $149.99

If you are open to using other programs, there is Pages – included with your Mac. (You might need to download Pages, Numbers, and Keynote from the App Store, but they would be free of charge.)

Another alternative would be LibreOffice . LibreOffice Writer serves a similar purpose to Microsoft Word. I would suggest downloading LibreOffice from the developer site, instead of from the App Store.

There is also a version of Microsoft 365 on the Web.

Microsoft 365 – Use Microsoft 365 apps for free on the web

You must be connected to the Internet whenever you want to use the applications. They run as Web pages rather than as native applications, so performance might not be as good as with paid versions built to run directly on the Mac. I'm not sure if you can store documents on your Mac or if you would have to store them on Microsoft's cloud (OneDrive).

Yes, i looked at that but I don't think its Track Changes for passing files back and forth will work. The Microsoft however is a big expense. And every year! I'd seen something somewhere you could get a cheaper version without the new AI, but can find no way to that .
