"Open in Photos" not working on MacBook Pro after latest macOS update

Hello everyone!

I have never posted in a forum before, but this is something that has been bothering me for quite a while…

I take a lot of screenshots on my Mac. Most of the time, I keep them in the Screenshots folder inside Finder since I do not use them for anything else. However, every once in a while, I use the “Open in Photos” feature when two-finger clicking on the thumbnail so that it quickly gets uploaded to my Photos library and I can access it on my iPhone.

I had been using this feature ever since I got my M1 MacBook Air, but close to the time I was getting ready to upgrade, I noticed that the feature had stopped working. Suddenly, when I clicked that option, nothing would happen—the Photos app would not open, and the screenshot thumbnail would just disappear. I thought that maybe it was due to something I had changed on my device without realizing it, so I did not try to fix it.

I upgraded to an M4 Pro MacBook Pro, and to my surprise, the issue was still present. I have tried everything—from repairing my Photos library to changing the path where my pictures are stored—but the issue persists. I should mention that I can still drag the photos from the Screenshots folder in Finder to the Photos app, and they upload with no issues. However, this adds an extra step that seems unnecessary, especially since I did not have to do it before and the option is still listed.

Out of curiosity, I tested this on my work M1 MacBook Pro, and the same thing happened! I am not sure if this is a bug or if I am missing something, but I have not been able to find ANY information on this topic. It is getting very frustrating since I used this feature regularly.

I realize that this is something very small and probably something that will be fixed soon, but I still wanted to put this out there with the hope of finding some information or reassure someone that is having this issue that they are not alone!

Hello everyone!!

I am very happy and excited to report that this bug appears to have been fixed on MacOS Sequoia 15.4.

The update released today and I updated to test the new Mail client and thought about testing the "Add to Photos" feature while I waited for my account to sync. To my surprise, it worked as soon as I tried it and continued to do so after closing all apps and purposely trying to break it lol.

Thank you all for your responses and help on this issue!
