Canon TS5050 Warning that printer will be incompatible with next Apple update Sequoia

I keep receiving warnings that

  • The alert may ask you to contact the developer for support because the extension needs to be updated or will be incompatible with a future version of macOS.

I am currently using Sequoia 15.3.1

Has anyone else had this and resolved it without buying a new printer? Thank you

If you will bear with me, I will offer some things to consider. Whenever we install an operating system upgrade or some OS updates, printers and scanners will often stop working. This means that the currently installed printer driver is not compatible with the newly installed operating system. So, a new OS compliant printer driver must be installed. What you can do is to thoroughly check the printer web site for an updated driver that works with the newly installed operating system. If one is not available, then you should ask when one will be released. If that doesn't work, if the Printer has the Air Print feature, that can be used and no driver will be needed. If not, then you can check the respected web site below where volunteers write free drivers for older printers which are no longer supported, but which work with newer operating systems. It is worth checking out. Good luck.

The Canon TS5050 is listed as a supported model in About AirPrint – Apple Support (UK) (en-gb edition February 18, 2025). This means that it should work with the latest macOS versions without the need for additional printer drivers when connected to the same network (Wi-Fi router) as a Mac computer. Printing should also be possible from an iPhone/iPad without additional apps.

You may want to check that the printer firmware has been updated.

The message is referencing an extension, which is not the printer driver and probably offers very little additional capabilities. With some all-in-one devices or maybe even just plain printers, there will be buttons on the device that allow you to do things like scan to computer. That extension would be necessary for those functions. I don’t recommend installing any bundle printer software, unless it is a driver for the printer or the scanner function in order to enable it to work with AirPrint or image capture.
