How to check Apple TV remote charge level without on-screen settings?

Thank you David. TV works all right. Apple tv seems to be ok although I wonder if it could be the HDMI cable that came with appletv. Resetting remote doesn't work. The pop up floating screen seems to be pushing to select source although I had selected HDMI. In short: unable to get inside appletv and access any of the settings, including the new modem ID and password. The picture attached shows how far I got. On the right hand top corner of the screen a message keeps streaming to pair remote and to hold it close to appletv which I do (I even put it on top of the black box) but to no avail.
