iPhone 16 Pro Max starts smoking and melting while charging

I've had my new iphone 16 pro max for less than a week and it literally started smoking while it was charging. The phone started making an alarm and the screen said something about their being moisture in the line. We immediately unplugged it and turned it off. Smoke poured out of the charging port. The charging cable is completely melted where it was plugged in, so I assume the melting plastic from the charger is what caused the moisture alert. Has this happened to anyone else? I'm on the phone now with an agent to get it replaced, but I'm wondering if I even want this model as it is a real fire hazard.

Hello!

Obviously, don’t use that cable anymore. Take the device in to a Genius Bar asap to have it examined. Take the cable with you, as they might want to see which cable you used. Also take the wall adapter if you used one.

If it started smoking, I wouldn’t trust charging it anymore, until deemed safe to do so by a Genius Bar employee.

Have a great day!

I sent it in and the technicians said there was water in the phone and it is not a manufacturer error. We had the phone for a few days, and since we didn't yet have a case for it, it did not leave the house. There is no possible way it got water in it with us. But support said "too bad" and won't replace it. Wanting to charge $600 to fix it. I'm about to stop being an apple customer.
