HomePod activating on its own randomly

My home Pod is activating at random time, sometimes in the middle of the night, playing music at maximum volume. I have a pair of Home Pods, and one is fine the other is the crazy one. When I stop the music, it waits for a few minutes and restarts playing the music. I've talked with 7 senior support specialists and they all seem baffled. One intimated that engineering has encountered this problem. We've tried everything, including plugging it into my Mac and restoring the software.

Can I assume that the speaker is foobar? Are they repairable, or would it be cheaper to just buy a new one?

Not repairable, it's the touch panel malfunction and currently the only fix is to open up the homepod and disconnect that touch panel cable to the speaker body. You can add delay to the touch panels through home app, it will help but eventually worsen back to what it is now. I opened mine up and disconnected the cable and now everything has been back to normal.

Apple we need a function to disable touch panel please!

Thanks a lot for that insight. After talking to 7 senior support people, none suggested that. After the many hours on the phone, I have come to the conclusion that tech support really doesn't have the tools and information sufficient to really support Home Pod problems.
