Touch ID not working on Mac ... using passcode instead

For the last few days I've noticed my fingerprint ID is not needed. There is an automatic sign in to different operations due to passcode. When I go to settings to activate Touch ID then, it will not allow me to.

In those settings I am unable to change the password, add a new fingerprint or activate the Touch ID to unlock, make purchases, etc.

What's going on? Can anyone help please?

First a question of 2, do you have ANY of the following types of third party apps installed:


  • Antivirus
  • Cleaning
  • Security
  • VPN
  • Maintenance


If the answer is No to each and every one then please do a Safe Mode restart and then restart normally and test. If the answer is Yes to any of the types of apps noted above. Please locate the developers uninstall instructions and uninstall them as they are likely the cause of the problem and those types of apps are 100% unnecessary and offer NOTHING that Mac OS cannot already do. Then restart in Safe Mode and restart normally and test.

Thank you. The option to use Touch ID has gone.

I restarted my Mac, removed my fingerprints. There is now no option currently to add new fingerprints. It seems to want to use my Apple Watch to unlock applications on my Mac. I don't want to do that.

It has "Password" at the top of the options saying a login password has been set for this user with the option to "change". If I type in the old password and then a new one (a different one), it says they don't match. Why would they?

Is it likely someone has changed something on this somehow?
