All iPhone models are world phones, so you can use them almost anywhere. Whether you are a GSM or CDMA network customer, you can roam internationally on GSM networks in over 200 countries or regions around the world. Availabilitys of LTE data varies in some countries or regions and depends on carrier support for certain LTE radio frequencies. Contact your wireless carrier for more information regarding international roaming policies and rates.

Do note Japanese iPhones have certain restrictions imposed by the government such as not being able to turn off the Camera shutter sound. You cannot bypass these limitations in any way as they are government mandated.

The warranty will only be valid in Japan. And you will need to take it back to Japan if you need warranty service as European Apple Stores and service providers may deny service for it.

Beyond that, the phone if unlocked (not tied to a Japanese carrier in any way) should work fine in Europe.

More specifically:

Legal - iOS Warranty Japanese - Apple

Apple は、iPhone、iPad、Apple TV、HomePod および Apple Vision Pro の保証サービスを、Apple またはその正規代理店が最初にデバイスを販売した国に制限することがあります。

Translation: Apple may limit warranty coverage for iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, HomePod, and Apple Vision Pro to the country where Apple or its authorized agents originally sold the device.

The fine print and disclaimer......

However, service will be limited to the options available in the country where service is requested. If the product is not portable, warranty service may be restricted to the country where the product is purchased. Service options, parts availability and response times will vary according to country. You may be responsible for shipping and handling charges if the product cannot be serviced in the country it is in.

This might be why the three Apple Stores in North Texas we visited would not provide warranty service for a friend's phone that was purchased in Mexico. I don't know about stores in other Texas cities.

So, while there might be a "World Wide Warranty", users should also note that "service will be limited to the options available in the country where service is requested"

Why does Apple publish a document about Worldwide Warranty service if there is none?

iPhones are portable.

”Apple or its Apple Authorised Service Providers will provide warranty service on products that are tendered or presented for service during the Warranty Period, as permitted by law. If the product is portable, meaning that it can operate independently without a power cord, you may obtain warranty service worldwide. However, service will be limited to the options available in the country where service is requested.”

What warranty takes precedence, Worldwide Warranty or Japanese/country of sale warranty? Japanese warranty has no legal standing in another country. Apple provides worldwide warranty coverage.

The translation of the Japanese warranty even uses the >may< to indicate it’s not being declined. In other words, they may limit the warranty and then again they may not. But it’s not my decision to state there is no warranty.

In my experience, there is.

Correct, service will be limited to options available. But that does not mean no warranty coverage. Apple is free to offer substitutions as to colors and models available in store. That satisfies the tourist or business person there for only a short period of time. If an exact replacement is needed, now there may be shipping charges etc. and a longer term visitor or resident can be satisfied.

In most cases and for non-cellular devices the World Wide Warranty is honored without issue.

The limitation in the Japan warranty is also ubiquitous in the Warranty terms for other countries and regions.

For cellular devices, Apple TVs and now Apple Vision some specific difference has historically dictated whether service can be offered or not. In the case of iPhones and cellular iPads it's the specific bands and also hardware have been historically an issue for replacements. For instance Chinese models do not support eSim, and you won't be able to get a Chinese model outside if china, or get a model that supports eSim from an Apple Store or service center in China.

Of course this is entirely at the discretion of the Apple Store or Authorized Service provider and the extent of the damage. I'm sure a screen or battery replacement would likely not be denied, but anything else probably will, as an exact model may not be available or may not be able to be procured in a timely fashion.

Historically this has been an issue in the forums as many people have posted Apple Stores or service providers have denied replacing an iPhone under warranty since the exact model with the exact bands, features and support for the country it is from cannot be had in a different country. Other times, the owner has been asked to pay for the shipping of a replacement model. This is all anecdotal from posts in the forum over years about this. As such, most of us have always recommended to buy the iPhone where it's intended to be used.

Yes, the Japanese warranty is applied to iPhones purchased in Japan and being serviced in Japan. However, an iPhone purchased in the US would be covered by the Worldwide Warranty if presented for service in Japan. Just as an iPhone purchased in Japan would be covered by the international warranty if service were requested in France.

The pushback I’ve seen in the communities has been from Apple Authorized Service Providers refusing service, refusing loaners, etc. The shipping service would be the best advice when an iPhone owner is not able to secure local service. A lot of the pushback is when they demand service from an AASP, or a loaner device. Shipping costs clearly aren’t covered.

Moving forward, maybe the caveat should be the device may need to be sent to an Apple service center and delays due to shipping, parts availability etc. may be encountered. Loaners are not part of the warranty.

I don’t believe it’s in the consumer’s or Apple’s best interest to state no warranty. But some short service is limited, may experience delays and incur shipping fees. Loaners are not covered by the warranty.

The China issue is a special case, but has been since the market was opened. I suspect Apple will ship one from the factory or even have very limited supplies for just such occurrences.
