How do I open HMRC basic paye on an older MacBook Air running macOS Big Sur 11.7.10?

hi I have a Macbook Air Big Sur 11.7.10. I use HMRC basic paye and it said I needed the new update which I have done . now it will not even open as my machine is too old. but it will not let it open and ive lost eveything and I need to do End of year stuff. Called HMRC and now been on phone for over 4 hours and spoken to lots of people who dont know . Is anyone able to help me pls. Im just a mum paying careers

for our disabled daughter.

Sorry to read that you're having trouble with the HMRC website. Like many gov (and other) websites the access can be problematic if your computer or browser don't meet minimum requirements.


HMRC website states that Mac compatibility is limited to macOS 14 and macOS 15 - Sonoma and Sequoia.

It also states that Safari is compatible, and I assume only those versions that are supplied with the above OS versions. It also states that Firefox and Chrome browsers are compatible. (I'd pick Firefox over Chrome)

As you are running a Mac on macOS 11 Big Sur, it appears that your options are:

• use a newer Mac with a compatible macOS version if possible

• use a PC with Windows 10 or 11 if possible


I would not expect anything less to be compatible with the gov website.

If HMRC support can't help you work out access with your current hardware, then you'll have to change it up or access that info some other way.
