How do I fix the 'Your system has run out of application memory' error on my Mac?

I am constantly get this pop out saying I am using too much application memory and i need to quit some applications. I have barely anything open and i dont know how to resolve the issue. Is this some sort of virus? Or is something wrong with my mac?
