If that attachment is an MS Word document (.docx), then right-click on that attachment, then select Save Attachment… and put it on your Desktop. Right-click on that Word document on your Desktop, and select Open With Pages. This will translate the Word document to Pages internal document format leaving the Word document unchanged.
You make your changes to the Pages document and then you can Export To > Word > Save… and give it a different name than the original Word document you opened.
