USB devices not readable on Apple M2 silicon, but work with Intel silicon

When I connect USB devices to my Macbook Air (Apple M2 silicon & Sequoia 15.3.2) I get the message "The disk you attached was not readable by this computer". If I attach the same devices, using the same cables, to a different Macbook Air with Intel silicon (also Sequoia 15.3.2), the devices are recognised without any problem.

This seems to narrow the problem to my Macbook Air with M2 silicon. Is this a configuration issue or a hardware issue? I have successfully connected these devices to the M2 Macbook in the past, although I have no record of the OS version I was using at the time.

MacBook Air, macOS 15.3

Mac notebooks with Apple Silicon chips may require you to give permission for USB and Thunderbolt accessories to connect.

If your Mac asks you to allow an accessory to connect - Apple Support

I don't know if that really has any bearing on this problem, given the rather specific error message you received, but thought I'd mention it, in case this is a factor.

According to the Support article, the permissions request happens with Ventura and later.

I have a Garmin Smart 51 device that is formatted as MS-DOS(FAT32). It used to work perfectly well with my M2 Macbook Air, but no longer.

I also have a SatMap Active20 GPS device, but that isn't being recognised by the Intel Macbook Air either - I'm not even getting an error message when i connect it, although the device does charge when I connect it to the Intel Macbook Air.
