Why do date fields change in Safari and Chrome on my iPad?

Hi so i am using safari and google chrome, both give the same issue.

on a website i enter a year range ie. 1801-1837 i hit return an it changes to 31 Dec 1800 to 31 Dec 1836.

why?

this does not happen on a windows laptop accessing the same page with chrome.
