Mac mini M4 trouble using two 4K TVs as displays

I have two 4K TVs that I use in my home office, I use these as a dual monitor setup on my work laptop throughout the day. One is a 43 inch Sony Bravia KD43X75WL and the other is an older Samsung 40 inch TV. These both work fine with my Windows laptop in 4K as extended screens, where I'm using USB-C to connect to the TVs HDMI ports.

So, I'd like to replicate this setup for my Mac Mini, it should be straightforward, but.... I purchased two of these USB-C to HDMI adaptors: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08X6QFSVZ?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_1&th=1 note they support 4K @ 60hz. If I plug the Sony TV alone, then I can run it at 4K resolution. However, as soon as I connect the Samsung TV, the Sony screen freezes and the Samsung takes over as master.

If I then unplug the Sony TV and plug it back in I see the message 'Choose to mirror or extend display from the menu'. I can the 'add' the Sony TV as a mirrored display and resolution is OK (both are the same). But if I want to extend the display then the Sony TV will only go up to 1080p while the Samsung will remain at 4K.

I have tried many different combinations to resolve this behavior: HDMI direct cables/ changing the order of connecting, lowering the resolution on both screens etc, but have not found a solution. When look as videos showing how to connect more than one monitor, the Display settings item simply shows both screens, side by side without any icons to indicate that they are 'different'.

However, I have to mirror or extend to see both screens, and then the Sony is the one I have to add every time, where it has a small icon - see the attached image:

I'd love to be able to fix this properly, so any help in resolving this will be much appreciated.

Thx

Thanks for the response, I'll provide a bit more information and some more screen grabs.

When the Sony TV only is connected:

With System info:

When the Samsung TV is attached (both are connected), it takes over and:

With system info:

I'm pondering if this is due to the way the Sony TV is presenting itself to my Mac; the name of the display is 'Sony TV *30'. However if I choose the 'add display button' I see the full device name of the TV as an option, see below (note the Office Left and Right are 2 Apple TVs):

When I want to mirror (when the Samsung is main), I must add that Sony device, but then the resolution is poor as described in my initial post.

Jon

OK, I have a workaround that does work but I'd still like to figure out a solution using the USB-C cables.

To further isolate things, I tried all 4 of the HDMI ports on my Sony TV, using the USB-C cable - no change. Then I tried a HDMI to HDMI cable into the same HDMI port on the Sony TV as my original setup. Now when I add the Samsung TV, via USB-C, I'm presented with the option to mirror or share directly. After extending, I see this (note that full resolution is now possible on both screens):

Of course both now show up in the system info too:

You are welcome.

Thank you for the screenshot.

Verify the Following:

Is the port loose on your Mac? What’s the model of your Mac(Go to: Apple menu > About this Mac > Dulled out lettering) and that you can use a 60Hz frequency.

On the cable you’ve provided, you have to have a snug fit, and as highly-compatible device.

Hi,

This is a new Mac Mini M4 512GB disk/ 16GB memory.

It does support 4K/ 60hz, which is why I chose those cables, it actually supports higher resolution and refresh rates, but my TVs don't.

All connections are snug and good.

This feels to me more like a cable compatibility issue, now that choosing to connect the Sony TV via HDMI directly and the Samsung via the USB-C to HDMI calendar has provided a workaround.

Jon
