How can I stop notifications from sounding in Silent mode on my iPhone?

I have my phone in silent mode, the sound is completely turned off. Yet app notifications still make noise, my mail app still swooshes when I send mail and some apps turn my sound back on without my knowledge. It’s super annoying bc you’d think if I turned sound off that my phone would make all my apps silent! This is a VERY bad design and I’m not sure why you would do this. Is it a bug? How do I fix it? I need a way to truly make my phone silent.

How are you enabling Silent Mode? In your first post, you talk about "Silent Mode" but in the second, you talk about having the volume turned all the way down. Can you describe exactly what it is you're doing?

Silent mode should silence system notifications. It doesn't silence alarms or media players, though.

I press the small button (above on the upper left side of my phone (if facing the screen)) and activate silent mode - apps can still turn on the volume and the mail app still makes the whoosh sound

Do you have that button set to activate Silent Mode?

2. I turn the volume all the way down and apps can turn back on my volume (even though I turned it off) and make noise, including the mail app which still whooshes
3. I have silent mode enabled AND my volume all the way down and the apps can turn on my volume and the mail app still whooshes

None of that is expected behavior.

I would try two things. First, update to iOS 18.4. Second, once that's done, force restart the phone.

See if that makes a difference.

No. If I enable Silent Mode, I no longer hear any system notifications.

I would expect in silent mode that nothing makes noise, I also expect with the volume all the way down (off) apps don’t make noise and don’t have the ability to override and turn back on the volume. What am I missing?

Hi SravanKra,

Yes, that is why I am seeking help to understand why this is happening. It goes without saying, if I have my volume turned off the phone shouldn’t make noise. I am seeking guidance from others about if they think it’s a bug or have ways to fix it.

Thanks!

I have the small button set to silent mode and it shows the banner at top when I activate it. I’m still hearing app noises, such as the mail app ‘whoosh’.

Turning off the volume on my phone should also mean the apps can’t make a noise but they do. Duolingo, mail app, alarms, etc. turn my volume back on without my consent and make noise.

Naturally, if both silent mode and volume are off this still happens.
