Can't move files from a iCloud or Desktop to external storage.

Is there ANYONE out there who can help me with this... or is the solution to buy more iCloud space? (I think I'm maxed-out already.) I'm an animation teacher who has to make many long videos to demonstrate principles of movement and to explain software techniques. That means my hard-drive/iCloud is constantly filling-up, so I have to urgently backup many of them to external drives every so often, just to make more current and different ones. But suddenly I cannot transfer files off my desktop Mac (Sequoia 15.1.1) to storage devices. (Seagate 'One Touch' - used them many, many times before and they're great!) However now, because of this, I can't even make screen-capture videos of my demonstrating software with QuickTime, so I'm going to have to cancel classes and lose income. Does anyone have a solution to this? I'm running out of options as even a long session using Mac's own support chat didn't help. I'm desperate here folks. My income/survival/mortgage payments are at stake! <:)

Is this what you mean, muguy? The problem is I don't know where the files are outside of the iCloud drive. The Desktop files are embedded into the iCloud too, so they cannot be exported, like those in the iCloud drive! You'll note too that 'System Data' takes up most of the GB listed, but I have no idea where those files are located. It was so much easier, once upon a time, when the 'Hard Drive' was listed separately from everything else. Then I knew where my files were. 'System Data' just does not cut it. I have no idea what (or where) they are. <:(

Seems like you might not have enough storage on the Mac to download the file. You probably need to free space. If your iCloud Drive folder exceeds the available space on your Mac, the Mac will try to keep as many files as possible locally. You may be better off storing your materials on an external drive in that case.

Yes, that's exactly what I'm trying to do muguy... move files OFF from my Mac drive, to an external storage device, not onto it. Then I can delete them from the Mac drive and free up space. (See the video I attached at the top of this thread.) But it won't let me do it, presumably because it's drive is full up. <:(

You may first need to move files already on your Mac (not in iCloud Drive) to free space. Or, use a different device to download some of your largest iCloud files and then delete those files to eventually free space on your Mac. Or, try to download the file in the iCloud Drive folder first (right click) the move that downloaded copy. Verify how much space you have in settings.

System data is managed by your computer. It is generally caches, Time Machine snapshots, etc. Some of the data may be cleared by restarting your Mac but most is simply managed by your device and freed is space becomes needed.

It appears that you are optimizing iCloud storage, so most files are not on your Mac but in iCloud only. Recommend downloading smaller files to your computer first (right-click on the file and select download). You can also try to drag/drop files to your home folder (or other location that does not sync on your hard drive). You can then move to an external drive.

If you have less stored in iCloud than the size of free space on your disk, you could also try turning off optimize. I'd guess something like 250GB in iCloud might still sync to your computer.

Or, you can download larger files by logging into iCloud.com. In Safari settings change your download location to either "ask for each download" or select "other" and point to your external drive. Once downloaded, you can delete the file from iCloud to save space.
