after force quitting and shutting down MacBook, each time Mail app is opened it gets hung up. I can see the email window with messages, but cannot click on anything. I tried restarting with 'shift' key pressed down and got same results. thank you

Thank you for the response. I actually tried to shut down and restart the mail app while holding the right shift key several times, and then the spinning beach ball of death finally dissapered and I was able to see my email. Much appreciates.

well I am not sure what is what here "email window with messages, but cannot click on anything."
so the newrer3-column view, you see content in all three columns(?)
Verify you have nothing stuck in the search window.
Verify you are seeing the search window Mail>View>Show Toolbar
