Mac Mini 2018 3.2 GHZ 6-Core. 64GB Memory. Sequoia 15.3.2

Yesterday my machine was fine. Today it was off. I turned it on, and it will only stay on for less than a minute. Each time it shows me the report that it had to be restarted because of an error. I was able to copy that to the notes app and pasted as Crash Report as additional text. Please let me know what you think. I have no idea what's going on but this is my main machine and it's basically dead now. Even when I don't login the login screen remains a few minutes before it crashes and turns off completely.

Have you tried running First Aid while booted into Recovery Mode? Some file system repairs can only be performed while booted from another source.

You can try using Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) to attempt to copy the files. You can select/deselect the items copied, plus CCC keeps a log of the items which it cannot copy assuming the system crash does not cause the log to be lost. Plus if CCC detects a problem, it will at some point ask if you want to skip items causing errors.

Because of the logging of CCC, if the log is intact after the crash, then you may know which file/folder had the issue and deselect it from the copy process. Then after everything else has been copied you can try individual items.

FYI, if you had good backups, then you should not have to worry about trying to retrieve files from a corrupted file system. There are a lot more new ways to permanently lose access to the data on the internal SSD of the recent Macs due to all of the hardware, software, and security changes.

I was able to restart into recovery and get to disk utility. Apparently the system container is fine but the user container has an error that it can't repair.

So then I put it in target disk mode and used my macbook to try and copy data off of the drive, guess what happened... my macbook crashed and reported the same invalid tweak type 2 error but with the finder application that was being used to copy data... so it would seem that there is a corrupted file somewhere in the /Users/x/Library directory, because that is what I was trying to copy. It seems absolutely absurd to me that a machine this advanced can't handle a corrupted file exception without crashing.

What was the exact error that was reported by Disk Utility?

It is possible that there is actual drive damage or an unrecoverable error in that sector in that file that can cause the issue and possibly a re format may be needed.

I would suggest copy all data that is not in the Users/x/Library as a precaution to another drive and reformat and re-install macOS and try to restore your system from your Time Machine or clone backup. If the drive will not reformat without error, then it is a drive malfunction for sure. Unfortunately, if that is the case, the Mini will require a new logic board since the SSD is soldered to the motherboard.

If it is successful, most everything in the user's Library folder can and will be regenerated with the exception of user preferences for various apps or restored via Time Machine backup during recovery. If you don't have a Time Machine backup or clone backup, you will need to re-install everything.

Thanks for the reply.

Disk utility says:

The container /dev/disk0s2 could not be verified completely. Storage system check exit code is 8. Storage system verify or repair failed. : (-69716)

Repair on the disk itself says its fine and no errors.

I tried to do an OS Install without wiping and it gives me the same storage system error code. So basically I'm going to have to wipe everything.

The problem is that when I have it in target disk mode the mac mini is fine and doesn't crash, however the macbook that I'm trying to copy files to keeps crashing with that same invalid tweak error. If it crashes quickly then it will say the problem application was finder. If it makes it hours into the copy then it will crash and say the problem was mdsync that had the invalid tweak error.

So I've been trying to tend to it and kill the mdsync process in the background during the copy but it is taking a significant amount of time. I only have a thunderbolt 3 cable. A thunderbolt 5 cable is arriving today, not sure if that will speed up the copy significantly or not.

Your speed on the 2018 Mini is Thunderbolt 3 so getting a Thunderbolt 5 cable will make no difference on transfer rates.
