Why does my AirPrint printer still show an old name?

reposting someone elses question... I have the exact same issue... iphone 15

My boss asked me to rename the printers so that they would be more easily identifiable. I was able to do that in the Printers settings but anyone who has previously printed to it still shows the old name.

Any new phone that hooks up to our network shows the new name.

Hello gladstonepete,

Ok found the procedure you need to do for each IOS device that still see the old printer name.

  • From your IOS device iPhone/iPad or Mac you will need to access the printer via a Web browser with the printers ip address.
  • example https://xxx.xxx.x.xx where x is your printer IP address.
  • Once you are there you will probably need to login into the printer with the printers password. If you don't have a password you might find in by printing the printers network configuration file.
  • Then you will need to click on the Network TAB to open.
  • Then depending on what brand printers you have HP, Brother, Epson, Canon you will need to look for the AirPrint advance settings and from there you will see the old printer name and you can make the change there. On my Brother Printer I found this under Protocol and from there I saw AirPrint Advanced Settings to make the name change.
  • This will need to be done for each IOS device you have that still see the old printer name in its print dialog menu box. Kind of a pain, but once you do the first IOS device the rest will be easy. Let me know how it goes

I agree with GeeZ06 that you will first need to dig through the onboard printer settings to change the Bonjour service name as well as the hostname. Then, you may also need to restart your LAN's gateway, router, or domain controller to clear cached hostnames and Bonjour names from DNS, reverse DNS, and DHCP. Then, as devices are restarted they should see the new name.

I’ve done that.. the printer has a new bonjour broadcast name.. it’s the iPhone that’s an issue it shows the old name when you try and print.

other iPhones that had never accessed the old name show the correct new name .

therefore it’s an iPhone problem not printer
