When editing an image in preview the image is whitened

I've seen a few other people report this in a closed thread, but since Sequoia was released I've noticed that images I open in Mac Preview which I edit and save to a separate image, although appearing correctly within preview, when opening with another application (for example Adobe Photoshop or uploading as an image to my website) is now severely whitened/washed out. Let me explain the steps I take in case someone can replicate.

  1. Open a jpg image which I've received in Mac Mail. Preview is default app.
  2. Under tools, select the adjust size option
  3. Downscale the image to 1200 px width (this usually makes the height between 850 and 950 px
  4. Proceed to select a portion of the image so I am left with a 1200 x 800 px image. The use CMD-c (copy)
  5. Open a new file by pressing CMD-n (New). The cropped image is now pasted into a separate image.
  6. I then proceed to save the image as a jpg file.

Attached you can see the same image, the left being the "saved" one from Preview, the right being the file opened in Photoshop.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Sorry, my question is how can I stop this from happening. And as to using the program which suits me best, for well over 10 years Preview has been the one, which is why it's so surprising that this keeps happening. I just want it to keep working as it always has.

Sequoia is latest release also.
