Turning Off Mail Category Icons on Android Phones

The hack for turning off yet another improvement that no one asked for might work on iPhones, but not for Mail users who, for various reasons, are compelled to use Apple Mail on Android phones (there's no Apple Mail app for Android). So am I doomed to deal with this unasked-for feature that I can't bear to use? As a former Apple employee (1993 - 2003), I miss Steve Jobs now more than ever. You could always appeal to his judgment when the company did something that worsened the user experience.
