The Photos app does not detect faces in photos synced from my Mac.

Hello. The Photos app on my iPhone does not detect faces in any of the photos synced from my Mac. It only detects faces in new photos I take with the iPhone.

I’ve had this issue since iOS 18. With iOS 17 and the same iPhone, I didn't encounter this problem. I’ve been waiting for a fix through updates, but we’ve reached iOS 18.4, and the issue persists.

I’ve tried everything over the past few months: leaving the iPhone charging overnight or for entire days, restoring old backups, setting up the iPhone as new, syncing my photo library from different Macs, even rebuilding my library from scratch with the original photo files, but nothing works...

The Photos app simply refuses to detect faces in synced photos.

Have the photos been synced manually from your Mac syncing with the Finder? Or are you syncing the photos with iCloud?

It does not make much sense to scan the photos synced from the Finder or iTunes for faces, because each new sync will replace the previously synced photos by the new sync.

The photos synced with iCloud should be scanned for faces however. my iPhone is scanning the photos synced with iCloud for faces, no problem.

How are you syncing, with the Finder or with iCloud?

Hi! I don't use iCloud for this. The photos are synced 'manually' through Finder on the Mac.

Not really, each photo was synced only once. If I added new photos, Finder would only sync the newly added ones, not the entire library again. Recognized people and pets were also retained, and only the new photos added during the last sync were scanned.

I've been doing this since iOS 10, with different iPhones and iPads, and I’ve never had this issue before. This is definitely a bug or issue with the Photos app in iOS 18.

As léonie was pointing out, that's not quite right. Some pictures that you see in Photos aren't actually in the Library. That's why they behave so oddly.

When I duplicate a synced photo, then this photo duplicate is scanned. Faces are recognised.

That's great! I think that you've figured out what to do! Duplicating is pretty much the same as what léonie suggested. She wanted you to take those pictures that don't actually belong to Photos and re-enter them, and, surprisingly to me at least, "Duplicate" does exactly that.
