Why is my second display not showing on Mac Studio?

I have a Mac Studio M2 Max running OS 14.2.1. I have a Wacom 22HD display connected through a USB-B to USB-C cable. The monitor shows up in System Preferences in the Wacom Center, but not in the Displays tab. So the monitor is not receiving any signal. I've tried shutting down the computer and restarting but no luck.

In your initial post, you said that you used a USB-B to USB-C cable.k

Are you sure that wasn't a USB-C to DVI adapter cable?

The Technical Specifications for the Cintiq HD-22D Creative Pen Display indicate that it has two ports: a DVI-I port, and a USB port. The Wacom user manual further indicates that you should use both ports to hook up the Wacom tablet to a computer. Video comes in on the DVI-I port and can be in digital (DVI) or analog (VGA) form. The USB connection presumably does not carry video at all. The Wacom tablet would use it to tell a computer about your use of the touch screen and pen as input devices.

The manual contains the caution: "Do not connect or disconnect the video or power cables while Cintiq or your computer are turned on. This can damage the display or computer video card."

I changed the cable connections, moving the cable for the monitor from one of the front ports into one of the ports in the back, and now the display is showing content. Interesting is that I took one of my portable hard drives that was plugged in in the back and plugged that to the front port and it works fine.

Which begs the question, what are the differences in capabilities for the ports in front and back?

On your Mac Studio, the only ports suitable for hooking up displays and display adapters are the rear-panel USB-C (USB, USB4, DisplayPort, Thunderbolt) ports, and the rear-panel HDMI port.

That's because on your Mac Studio – like on all others with Max chips – the front-panel USB-C ports are USB only. There's no support for DisplayPort or Thunderbolt video output.

For the data connection to the Wacom tablet, any of the USB-A and USB-C ports on your Mac Studio (whether on the front or the back), or on hubs/docks connected to them, should be fine. All of those USB-A and USB-C ports support traditional USB protocol, which the Wacom tablet uses to report pen input events.

Thanks for this. It clarifies the situation. But one lingering issue, after plugging the DVI cable into the Thunderbolt ports in the back, is that if the computer goes to sleep and then I wake it back up by hitting any key on the keyboard, the main monitor comes back on but not the Wacom. In order for that to work again, I have to restart the computer. Would this be a cable issue or something to do with the Mac Studio?

I don't know. You could try

  • Using Lock Screen (instead of Sleep) on the Mac Studio, or
  • Trying to wake the computer up by generating pen input events on the Wacom tablet

and see if either works around the problem.
