iPad Gen 10 Consumer Cellular Hotspot Unsupported?

Played the long game with both parties, CC and Apple, apparently the iPad Hotspot feature is NOT supported. Only phones they sell work. The hint is in the lack of any outside tablet on its website. CC sells its own “GrandPad” but discontinued its portable hotspot device.

SO – has any CC customer successfully used their iPad as a hotspot?

There is an online hack in which a user simply renames their iPad their home network with the same password. Went for a short drive to test this but it didn’t work. Apparently spoofing the name cannot fool the iPad because it’s still looking for the network, even though in the networks list there’s that hotspot link icon next to that network name.

Have any CC customers out there gotten this to work and how?

Thankee.

wouldn't you get a better response from CC customers if you posted on CC's forum?

Seems someone’s zooming someone here

Careful with your phrasing; the mods may view that as a ToU violation. We are all other end users here, not Apple nor CC. This is a very active forum section and the lack of responses suggests to me that few other people have tried or encountered this, at least recently.

There may be an option to find older Apple Community posts on the subject. Internal search here only goes back about three months. To look farther back for older Community posts on the subject, you can try a site-delimited web search string similar to this in your favorite search engine:

site:discussions.apple.com "CC hot spot"

👉🏻 Note that there is no space between the colon following "site" and the "d" in discussions. You may have to edit the parenthetical phrase to get additional hits, but the example I post is a start.

If CC has user forums like these, those would be better than trying to get some support CC support person to open up.

Whether or not you will be able to access the Hotspot feature will be determined by your Cellular Plan with your Carrier - and in turn, access to APN settings will be controlled by the physical SIM (or eSIM) installed on your device. While your iPad may be technically capable, your Cellular plan must also support this feature.

Some Cellular plans don't support tethering (i.e. Cellular Hotspot) at all - while others may charge an additional fee for this feature to be activated.

Ultimately, only your Cellular Carrier can resolve the ability to access Hotspot features and associated settings.

I’ve read numerous threads here and elsewhere in which iPad owners

cannot get Cell service via CC. FALSE. It took plenty of tooth pulling,

but I have cell service. Even in our relatively remote area, I get decent

internet when the power’s out.

So, what’s the problem with the hotspot? Seems someone’s zooming

someone here. Problem has to reside in the APN settings, which are

uneditable, per the carrier or Apple, dunno which.

Thanks for the reply but both parties have fallen off the turnip truck.

A visit to a CC field office got me cell service. THREE subsequent visits

over the hotspot issue yielded no fruit. That’s atop the four phone convos

I had with CC’s Tech Support.

Two visits to Apple yielded no fruit. The Blame Game.

I still think the problem is in the APN settings. Possibly MY settings, but ones

that are more buried in the mix than the Cellular Settings.

As far as rare, I think not. People have had enough problems just getting cellular

to work on iPad and I’ll bet many simply gave up. I DO have cellular. Why the

hotspot fails makes NO sense. I wonder what the poster in NZ understands

that these two companies cannot sufficiently explain.

As far as violating ToU, I’d say my quip was rather mild. I’ve seen FAR worse.

Both parties claim these capabilities work OOTB, so why all the nonsense

AFTER the purchase? They got their money but I still don’t have full functionality.

Anyways, thanks for the reply.

Hi Lotus, thanks. I know all this I just wish someone could point

to THE APN setting responsible for connection. CC is wishy-washy

about its support – CC says my iMEi number IS supported, but is

that cellular only or both? They do offer hotspots, but its clear as

mud for iPad.

Again – the problem is Tech Support, because many of these folks

don’t have experience with my setup. That’s the problem here.

BOTH companies.
