What USBC/HDMI/Cable standards are required to enable LG TV as monitor for iphone 16 pro

Currently using a Boneik USB C to HDMI adapter on a HDMI cable connected to my iPhone 16 pro, however the display on the LG C3 OLED has a red background and there is a deep pink/red wash all over making video unwatchable.

The same result occurs whether HDMI directly connected to TV or through receiver. Also tried with different HDMI cable.

Are there particular cable and/or HDMI standards I need to be aware of to match the USB C output of the phone?

I've checked TV settings and it works well with a GoPro camera connected to HDMI.

With the iPhone 16 Pro now having full USB-C support (including DisplayPort over USB-C), there are a few key standards and considerations to get your LG to display properly.

USB-C Adapter Must Support DP Alt Mode (DisplayPort Alt Mode)

  • Not all USB-C to HDMI adapters support video output — even among those that do, many only support up to HDMI 1.4 or lower resolutions. The Boneik adapter you’re using might not fully support HDMI 2.0+ or may have signal compatibility issues with the iPhone’s DisplayPort alt mode output.
  • Look for a USB-C to HDMI adapter with HDMI 2.0 or 2.1 support and explicit iPhone 15/16 Pro compatibility.

HDMI Cable Standard

  • I suggest only using Premium High-Speed HDMI cables (HDMI 2.0 or 2.1 rated). However, since you've tried different HDMI cables, it's more likely the adapter than the cable.

Color Space Mismatch (YCbCr vs RGB)

  • Some adapters or devices default to YCbCr instead of full-range RGB. If the iPhone or adapter forces a signal the LG interprets incorrectly, the result can be color distortions like you're seeing.

Ok, with that said, here are some suggested fixes:

  • Try an Adapter That Supports HDMI 2.0+ and DP Alt Mode: Look for Apple's USB-C Digital AV Adapter, or Anker’s USB-C to HDMI Adapter (model A83120A1 or newer) — both explicitly support 4K60 and proper HDR over HDMI.
  • Force RGB Mode on the LG C3 (if possible): In LG Settings > Picture > HDMI Deep Color, turn it on for that input. Also, check the "PC Mode" or "Input Label" — if it’s set to something like “Blu-Ray” or “Game,” try changing it to "PC", which often enforces RGB input.
  • Avoid USB-C Hubs with HDMI Ports Unless Spec'd Clearly: Cheap hubs often mishandle color spaces or reduce output to 4:2:0 chroma, which can cause red tints or washed out colors on OLED panels.

Finally, try a direct connection test:

  • Use a USB-C to HDMI cable (not adapter) that supports HDMI 2.0+ and is known to work with Macs or iPads for video output. An example would be Cable Matters USB-C to HDMI 2.0 cable.

Thank you for the comprehensive information.

I've checked the TV settings, ensured deep colour is on and adjusted other settings where available.

Was coming to the same conclusion as you suggest, to use a single quality cable without an adapter.

However, it turns out the TV may simply not allow me to connect the phone camera as a monitor as I can do with the GoPro using a single micro HDMI to HDMI cable.

The red colour wash image I'm getting through the HDMI connection is a simple mirroring image and while it will show video playing, it will not switch to full screen mode even when I rotate the phone to landscape. The image remains a narrow portrait in the middle of the screen. Solving the colour problem may not resolve this.

Yes, I can play content from the phone by Airplay, however i can not use the TV as a camera monitor using the HDMI. The TV user guide seems to confirm this.

The user guide suggests it may be possible to connect as a usb camera and then use the camera as I would like to do, but I need to do this through the app (why always the app instead to the obvious direct method) and I will look at this.

However I greatly appreciate your information, it has aided my understanding of cable standards.
