How can I set a different password for Apple Passwords app on my Mac mini?

On my M2 desktop, the Apple Password app is using the same password that I use to login to the desktop. Given that I like to have a fairly simple desktop login (my kids love to look through all the photos for example), is there a way to have a more complex password just to open Apple Passwords?

Nope. The Passwords App, uses your account password, and there's no way to change it.

For better control, you can create a new user account for your children with whatever restrictions and limitations you need and that way your passwords are out of there reach.

Why not give them their own account on the Mac separate from yours?

Why do they have to access your account?

A user account is a personal thing. There's no reasons to be sharing it with your kids. They should have their own account on the Mac do whatever they need to do.

I guess the real problem is that I want to use a complex password to access Apple Passwords and a much simpler one to login to my Mac desktop. LastPass and Keeper have a totally separate login password so why not Apple PW?

No one here in this user-to-user forum can answer "why" Apple does or does not do something. You can let Apple know your thoughts here:

Meanwhile, if some other password manager better suits your needs, you should use that.

Thanks @phil0124. Thats crazy from Apple though as that would mean I need a complex password to login to my desktop!

Why? Give your kids their own account on your computer without access to your passwords. Then you just need a password your kids don't know for your account. Unless they are budding little hackers, it shouldn't need to be terribly complex. And make sure they know there are consequences if they don't respect your privacy.
