How to resolve 'The version of macOS on the selected disk needs to be reinstalled' error after clean install on Mac Studio?

Started to do clean install of Mac Studio (2022 M1). Created bootable USB (Sequoia) and erased Macintosh HD. Completed re-installation but upon initial boot I get this message: “The version on the macOS on the selected disk needs to be reinstalled”

Tried repeated attempts either using USB drive or built-in “Recovery” option. Get same message easch time.

Apple phone support was not able to offer any advice other than “bring it in”

Anyone experience this, and more importantly, find a solution

Sounds to me that it is not connecting to the internet to download the latest OS. ilo WiFi can you connect direct using an ethernet cable? The fact that it states you must install the OS indicates to me that you're not getting the file to install. To make a USB installer would require another Mac.

You can try a DFU Firmware Revive which resets the security enclave chip & system firmware....I doubt this will help, but it would save you from the next option which is a DFU Firmware Restore which does what the Revive does plus resets the internal SSD & pushes a clean copy of macOS onto the internal SSD. Unfortunately the DFU Firmware Revive/Restore requires access to another Mac currently running macOS 15.x Sequoia.

No. You need to use another Mac that is compatible with an OS that your "broken" Mac can use although that Mac can currently be running any version of macOS.

The other option is to perform a DFU Firmware Revive if you are attempting to salvage an existing installation (resets the security enclave chip & system firmware), or better yet a DFU Firmware Restore which does the same thing as the Revive, but also resets the internal SSD & pushes a clean copy of macOS onto the internal SSD. Unfortunately the Revive/Restore currently requires access to another Mac running macOS 15.x Sequoia.

Hi, I run into the same issue. I did select the upper volume and erased the whole MacBook (pro, 16 inch screen, M1 chip, 2022). Then reactivated it via WiFi, after the "Erase and reboot" I reconnect WiFi and it said "Your Mac has been registered". After that, I clicked re-install MacOS Sequoia (version 15.4), but every time it failed after the first reboot. First it asks which should be the startup disk, I click the (only) disk that says "MacOS 15.4" and I click the restart button at the "Are you sure" message, but then it says the OS has to be re-installed. It is an infinite loop...

I just did re-install the OS. That was the whole point of doing this. Every time it takes like 45 minutes, I think first it is downloading the OS from internet, right? Is there a way to make a bootable USB (from a non-Mac !, Linux Ubuntu in my case) with Sequoia 15.4, cause this is really annoying while troubleshooting; having to wait 45 minutes for each try. Help!

Created a bootable USB prior to starting this adventure. It was used on my first attempt. Switched between Recovery Mode to reinstall OS and the stick for multiple attempts. All with the same results. Taking to Apple this morning. Hopefully they can check the firmware and get it installed

Right after upgrading macOS to version 15.4 Sequoia, I had this problem. I have reinstalled the system several times, all in vain. In Recovery downloaded version macOS 15.4 Sequoia so logically assumed that the problem is not in the SSD or anything else, but in this version of macOS. And I do not know how to solve this problem. I don't have another Apple device to create a bootable flash drive. Is it possible to roll back Recovery to the version when it offered to install macOS Sonoma? I don't know what to do.

Problem resolved. HWTech was right on. I took my Mac into my local Apple Store for a Genius Bar appointment. They performed the DFU (Device Firmware Upgrade) Restore process. It requires the connection of my Mac to another Mac (doesn’t need to be a Mac Studio, just a Mac that is running the latest OS). It reset the firmware and loaded macOS Sequoia 15.4, and it all took under 15 min. Thanks to all for your support. Now back to loading all my apps and data.
