Unable to add my HP printer to my computer wirelessly after reinstalling

I bought a new computer about 4 months ago and I had my hp printer hook to it wireless and if worked fine printed with no issues. about 2-3 weeks ago I went to print something and it showed off line, so I finally decided to remove and reinstall. the printer showed online but when I went to add I typed in hp and nothing happened no list came up. I wasn't able to add the printer and then I tried a different printer hp and same came up. Then I typed in the ip address and it took but when I tried to print nothing happened. Was there an update that might have messed it up?

You didn't provide us with the model number of your HP printer, but typically you can print to them with a number of different methods depending on what you are printing from. Not all HP printers support AirPrint, but most newer models do.

A couple of important things:

  1. Both your HP printer and your Mac must be on the same local network subnet.
  2. With AirPrint, your Mac uses Bonjour (a version of mDNS) to locate the printer. In order to use Bonjour, the IPv6 protocol must be enabled on both your Mac and your local network's router. Internet IPv6 is NOT required. For the Mac, you would configure your wired or wireless access connection to your local network for: IPv6 Link-local only.

When a printer is properly added as an AirPrint printer, it would appear in: System Settings > Printers & Scanners

If it doesn't appear there, try adding the printer again, as follows:

  • System Settings > Printers & Scanners > Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax...
  • On the Add Printer window, select the middle icon "IP"
  • For the Protocol option, choose AirPrint.
