"where is" app on iPhone is missing play sound option with all AirTags

Hi there!

I own three AirTags and today I had to change the battery for one of them. After that I checked the AirTag in the "Where is" app on my iPhone and noticed, that the "Play Sound" button is absent. On my MacBook and my iPad the buttons are still there and they work, but not on the iPhone.

I do not know since when this issue exists, but I know it worked about 6 months ago.

I also miss the option to navigate directly to the AirTags, Navigate now starts the maps app. This also worked before.

Any clues how to fix it? Resetting the iPhone is not an option for me, I have several apps installed whose authentication is tied directly to the device (banking, work, etc.) and it would be a huge manual effort to restore all that.

Try the following:

Check Location Services & Permissions

  1. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services. Make sure it's enabled.
  2. Scroll down to Find My. It should be set to While Using the App and Precise Location should be ON.

Sign Out and Back In to iCloud (mildly disruptive but not like a full reset) This often clears account-level syncing bugs.

  1. Go to Settings > [your name] > Sign Out, then sign back in.

Warning: You will need to re-download iCloud Drive contents and may have to re-authenticate some services, but it's way less intrusive than a full device reset. If you go this route, make sure Find My iPhone is disabled temporarily.

Check System Updates

Just to rule it out — go to Settings > General > Software Update and install if anything’s pending.

Regarding the “Navigate” button behavior: iOS 17+ has changed some flows here — instead of the old-style full-screen in-app direction tracking, it may default to launching Maps directly for navigation (especially if Precision Finding isn’t available at the time). However, Precision Finding should still appear if you're within Bluetooth range and using an iPhone with a U1 chip (iPhone 11 or newer).

If it's not showing up, make sure:

  • Bluetooth is on
  • You’re within range
  • UWB (Ultra Wide Band) is not restricted (like in certain countries or system-wide settings)

Hi Tesserax, thank you for your detailed reply!

Signing off and on at iCloud I will try later, but this is what I checked so far:

  • Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services: Is enabled
  • While Using the App and Precise Location are ON
  • iOS is 18.4 (latest version today)
  • Bluetooth is on
  • I am in range (iPad and Macbook in front of my have no problems)
  • UWB is not restricted (the feature once worked on this exact device)

I even reinstalled the "Where is" app, that did not change anything.

The iCloud thing I will check tomorrow, but I already did this in the middle of February because my Apple Watch was not in sync and refused to record activity (the red ring) and claimed I was standing every hour of the day (the blue ring). Maybe this also caused the trouble with where is, I don't know.

I'll keep you posted on whether I was successful.

Regards

Marcus

I think it was hardware in an unknown state. Powering the phone down, then back on cleared all problems. All of my settings appeared to be correct, and now I have "Play Sound" and "Find Nearby" available to me again. Yay!

Thank you for the detailed suggestion, it was helpful when verifying settings.

Ok, wow. Same here. I definitely restarted manually after installing iOS 18.4, but restarting the device again today helped, even without reconnecting iCloud. No idea what didn‘t work after the 18.3 update, but thankfully everything is working again. Thanks again for the good checklist!
