How can I recover Notes from an external hard drive

Is there any way to recover notes on a hard drive whilst using an external hard drive to boot the computer. The notes weren't backed up to icloud, and I can't seem to find them anywhere on the drive.

The computer won't boot of the internal hard drive for some unknown reason, and the only way I was able to get the computer to the work was to boot it using an external hard drive. During the process of creating the bootable drive I used migration tool when prompted, which perhaps was a mistake. I've since managed to retrieve everything of the hard drive that wasn't backed up, except for some notes.

Anyone have any ideas?

Navigate to that Mac's internal drive, and locate the following folder in the affected User Account:

~/Library/Group Containers/group.com.apple.notes/

Copy the entire contents of that folder to the identical location on the startup drive.

Migrating the contents of the startup drive that no longer boots was the right thing to do, but the reason your old Notes were not migrated is unknown.

You can find it in the same relative location. Navigate to the internal drive, then open its Users folder, which resides at its top level, specifically

/Users

You should be able to find the User Account within it. Open it, then open Library. The Group Containers folder should be within it. That's how you get to the location I described.

~ represents the fully qualified path to your User Account on that internal drive.

Within the users folder there is two user accounts to choose from, both of which do not contain any folder titled library. When I first examine the internal drive, I'm presented with 5 folders, applications, library, Install data, system and users. There's also something called a staging file whatever that is.

I understand neither User Account contains a Library folder. It's anyone's guess what may have caused them to disappear, but without a Library folder there is nothing to recover.

Their disappearance is almost certain to be related to the inability to boot the internal startup drive.

While within the user folder for your account on the internal drive, press the following three keys to toggle showing hidden items off & on:

Shitf + Command + Dot/Period

Normally the Library folders within user accounts are hidden from view and this key combination should reveal it if it still exists. You can confirm this is working by testing it by viewing your current home user folder within the Finder.

Thank you. They were indeed hidden all along. Now that I've located the notes, what do i do now? I've copied everything inside group.com.apple.notes from the internal hard drive to same location on the external hard drive but when I open the notes app, the notes aren't there? Any ideas?

I managed to find the folders, turns out they were hidden all along. I've since copied everything inside the group.com.apple.notes folder from the internal hard drive to the same place on the external hard drive, but when I open the notes app, they don't seem to be there. Any ideas?

*SOLVED*

After I had copied the entire contents of the group.com.apple.notes folder from the internal hard drive to the external hard drive. I copied the Notestore.sqlite, -shm and -wal files from group.com.apple.notes folder from the internal hard drive and replaced them with the ones in the external hard drive.

I then opened the notes app, and there they all were. Thank you to everyone that helped me out. Much appreciated.
