Slow operating system in Monterey 12.7.6

I have an iMac late 2015, bought in 2017, essentially entirely rebuilt at the genius bar in 2024. Over the past few months I am having issues with the installed version of Microsoft Office opening, MacMail showing email (I do bring in gmail email and I know that creates some of this). I am only now running Acrobat Reader, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Numbers, Firefox and Safari, and MacMail on the system so I am at a loss as to how to improve performance. I have run the free Malwarebytes which an Apple tech told me to use and there are no issues there. Start up is also incredibly slow, when and older iMac I have starts without any issue, and programs launch without any issue, so not sure what is happening here. HELP!

3.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5 processor, 8 GB 1867 MHz DDR3, Graphics: AMD Radeon R9 M390 2 GB.

Nothing is set to launch at startup. MacMail has been terrible for a while which I am working on archiving the emails out of its database onto an external hard drive. Then I will rebuild that data base. Hopefully that will help. However, the Mac ran a bit better after the rebuild and had gotten really slow in the past month. The only difference between this Mac and the older one is the use of MacMail and I wonder if that is the entire problem.

Do to mean this one ?

In either case, the computer may have a Rotational / Mechanical Drive or a combo of a SSD and Mechanical Drive ( Fusion Drive )

Then how much RAM is it configured with ?

Rotational Drives are slower than SSD Drives.

Fusion Drives are a bit faster as the SSD is used for some things but the Mechanical portion is going to slow things down

iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015)

  • 3.2GHz
    • 1TB (7200-rpm) hard drive
    • Configurable up to 3TB Fusion Drive or 256GB or 512GB of flash storage (SSD)
  • 3.2GHz
    • 1TB Fusion Drive
    • Configurable up to 3TB Fusion Drive or 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB of flash storage (SSD)

  • 8GB (two 4GB) of 1867MHz DDR3 memory; four SO-DIMM slots, user accessible
    • Configurable to 16GB or 32GB

Malwarebytes is OK. I use it but only when needed manually. Not sure what the WD and Seagate helper tools are since I do not use them with my WD drives so cannot speak to impact.. You have a Fusion Drive and it shows slow read/write speeds compared to the newer Mac computers. You are also running xProtect which I assume is for some video security use but if only active using video should not slow your Mac down. I see nothing else but like I have hinted your Mac is now considered old and you may want to look at a later model the has an SSD drive and more Ram. We should let others comment on the report.

Thanks for all your help. I guess I will just bite the bullet and get a new one here in the next month or so. Ironically, my 2013 iMac is running with no issues although I only use it when I need to use my installed version of Creative Suites which is on rare occasion now that i have retired that portion of my business. Go figure.

Regardless if the computer was ReBuilt by Apple service Centre

The machine is 10 years old with a Fusion Drive and only 8 GB RAM

It has had a long life and time to look for something much newer with an SSD configuration and at least 16 GB RAM

Okay. I don't run any antivirus software in the background. Below is the report from EtreCheck. I will locate the items they say should be removed and remove them. Am I also to remove items they indicate are not loaded? Any other suggestions? They say that MalwareBytes is running but it is not. When I click on its icon is asks me to open it, so not sure what that is about. Thanks for your help.

We need more info. You have not stated exactly what model you have as far as the drive or RAM. You may have a 5400 RPM drive or a Fusion drive which can be slow by them selves. Do you have 8GB of ram or more? Do have apps starting at login or not. How did this Mac run after the 2024 rebuild? Has it always been slow or just recently?

1.02 TB Fusion Drive.
Your Mac contains 4 memory slots, each of which accepts
a 1867 MHz DDR3 memory module. 2 are in use, factory installed, 2 are available.
Hope this gives all the info needed to troubleshoot.

Suggestion 😎

Not the email app that could cause the slow down. I'm guessing you have slow drive which only will get slower with each new OS update. Also you can use more Ram (at least 16). I would run the free app EtreCheck which may find some issues. You can post the report here for us to review. No personal data will be revealed. Also, be sure you do not have any anti-virus programs running. They are not needed.
