Posting to Recommend a Good USB Hub for Macbook Air
I bought a new Macbook Air laptop last year and bought the USB C to USB A adapter from Apple. However, I needed a hub so I would have more ports and tried one I found on Amazon. I really didn't know what I was doing at the time, but I've found that I made a great choice! The Anker USB hub I found has 1 USB C "multi-function" port and 1 USB C data port, along with two USB A ports for data. The "multi-function" port is for both power and data. At the time, I did not realize how important this port would be!
Now I've learned that many accessories need a powered data port. A powered port without data is only good for charging. When I connect my DVD drive or my camera, neither will run on a data port alone. They both need to be plugged into the charging port. Instructions say to plug it into a port that's directly into the computer and do not use a hub. However, when I use the multi-function power and data port, they work great and I do not need to remove the hub. (Removing the hub would be very awkward for me, because I have a small USB wireless mouse that uses one of my other hubs.) The DVD drive has a plug with USB C. My camera is old and only has a USB A port, so I need to use the dongle that I bought from Apple and then plug it into the USB C power/data port.
I've been using this port for close to a year now, so I just wanted to post so others would know what to look for. The port I bought also has an HDMI port and a Micro SD slot which I haven't used, so I can't comment on those two issues. However, it works great for what I need and also mounts flush with the computer so if you want to move the laptop around you don't have to worry about something dangling.
Here is the link for Amazon. I hope this is allowed. I will receive NO compensation if anyone buys this. I'm just posting to help others. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BNZ5V1TF?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_1
