Apple Pencil wont connect to iPad Pro

Update: I was told the 2nd Gen Apple Pencil would work on this iPad when I was purchasing and that isnt the case! Will return the Apple Pencil and purchase one that is actually compatible.

Hi, I just purchased a new iPad Pro 11in. (M4) as well as a brand new Apple Pencil (2nd generation). My issue is that I cannot connect the Apple Pencil to my iPad. The pencil will connect to my friend's iPad Air 4th Gen. I tried connecting her apple pencil (fully charged) to my iPad and even that one will not connect.

I feel as I have tried everything- turning my ipad on and off again, hard resetting, turning my ipad's bluetooth on and off again, and resetting my iPad's network settings.

My iPad is also running the latest IOS (18.4). Im not sure if there are any other remedies for me to try before resulting to returning the iPad which is something I really wouldnt like to do.

Any help would be much appreciated!

The iPad Pro M4 supports only the Apple Pencil Pro - and the USB-C Pencil.

Here is Apple’s definitive compatibility list for Apple Pencil and iPad:

Apple Pencil compatibility - Apple Support

Different models of Apple Pencil have different pairing interfaces and charging methods - and are therefore not interchangeable.

While the second generation Apple Pencil and Apple Pencil Pro are both charged via the compatible iPad's inductive charging dock, the charging coils are of a different design. Due to repositioning of the iPad's front-facing camera, that now occupies the internal cavity previously used to accommodate the inductive charging coils, the coil location has changed. Consequently, the internal design of the two Pencil models have also changed.
