iPad Pro battery drain issue after iPadOS 18.4 update

I have two IPad Pro (M4) and both immediately starting draining battery at rate of around 50% per hour while using Safari after the 18.4 update. I am very technical, I have let both adjust for a day or two, plugged in and on battery, have restarted multiple times, have disabled extensions, etc. But this seems to be a bug in power management in Safari and 18.4 only, as both actually get warm to the touch while this happens.

Any other activity doesn't exhibit this behavior and both batteries are at >98% capacity as I have been limiting their charge. Anyone else see this?

And no I am not going to start by backing up, erasing and reloading everything, what I call the default Microsoft "fix" to every issue.

Thanks if you see my post above I have already checked and Safari is the culprit that drains the battery. I have also tried restarting and disabling background refresh and location services are not the issue as Safari is the culprit.

I am a professional developer so pretty technical. I am not going to reset the all settings as that will involve having to reconfigure quite a few things for what most likely is a software bug. The drain correlates directly with 18.4 update on two different iPads (11 and 13" same generation).

Update: I downloaded and tested DuckDuckGo browser and the battery drain immediately stopped. So it is definitely a bug in Safari and its power management.

Since it seems confined to your 2 devices, I would try closing all tabs in Safari and also turn off Safari at Settings > [name on top] > iCloud, in case there is something that is having trouble syncing with iCloud. Compare your results and turn back on. If your 2 iPads are using the same Apple Account, then any problem with syncing specific data from iCloud would be the same on both devices.

If your iPad Pro is experiencing battery drain after the iPadOS 17.4 update, start by checking Settings > Battery to see which apps are using the most power.

A simple restart can help clear any background bugs from the update. Disable Background App Refresh and Location Services for non-essential apps in Settings, and turn off Analytics & Improvements under Privacy.

Also, make sure all your apps are updated from the App Store, as outdated apps can cause power issues.

If the battery continues to drain quickly, you can try resetting system settings by going to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset All Settings—this won’t delete your data but can clear out problematic configurations
