My iPhone won't display to my TV with an HDMI connection

My 2nd generation SE iPhone can’t transmit its screen image to the TV with an HDMI connection. Our iPhone 12 does so. Any suggestion on how to make the SE do so?

For whatever it's worth:

iPhone 12 - Technical Specifications - Apple Support

The Technical Specifications say similar things about both phones.

"Video Playback … Video mirroring and video out support: Up to 1080p through Lightning Digital AV Adapter and Lightning to VGA Adapter (adapters sold separately)"

Why does it matter if the TV has an HDMI port?

you screen mirror using airplay, if you’re TV does not support airplay then you can’t screen mirror.

To activate screen mirroring swipe up on your iPhone to get the control center then push the button that has two screens back-to-back, then select your TV.
