I check spelling upon send which still generates the usual dialogue box, but if I dismiss this (for instance because an email has lots of technical content that isn't in dictionaries) the email can't be sent. Instead I have to close the email to save it as a draft, reopen the email and dismiss the spelling dialogue box a second time to send the email!?! Why?

There's a bug in 15.4!!! In Mail Settings under "Composing" DO NOT select "When I Click Send"—only check "Never" or "As I Type." Otherwise your email may not send.

Apple will know nothing about this unless you submit a report. No one here is an Apple employee or Apple contractor. Apple Support does not monitor these forums. We are all just fellow users here trying to help one another the best we can. Submit a bug report through the proper channels.
I'm at 15.4.1 (a year after you posted this problem) and just noticed this problem. I tried your suggestion by changing to "As I type" and that appears to have worked. Thanks for the tip.
I am having the same issues. Turned off the speller and the email goes through. This is new.
So have, either of you updated to 15.4.1 yet?
The bug remains in 15.5, alas.
I would conclude then that Apple does not consider your issue to be a bug at all. You may just have to learn to live with it. Or if it’s a bug it’s way down on the priority list for the software engineers. So far there’s only two you complaining about it here.
