Can The Mac Mail preview pane be on the left?

I have begun using Mail with the preview as a column, where it appears on the right of the messages list. Is it possible to position it to the left of the messages list?

I asked M. Google, and the 'smart' answer I received appears to say this is possible. But I couldn't make it work as described:
