iMac failed to complete power-on boot. No volumes shown in macOS Utilities

2017 iMac, unable to boot far enough to see software version, but has been updated to most recent available version. On power-on, system starts to boot but does not complete. Progress bar gets to approx 95% but then screen shows circle with diagonal line and text of "support.apple.com/mac/startup". Managed to boot into recovery, but will only run Internet Recovery. Was unable to do "Restore..." or "Reinstall..." either with or without external backup drive connected. All utilities fail to show icon for any disk, so am not able to complete any recovery. Terminal app is available but I am not knowledgeable enough to know what or how to try. Can someone please help me get this fixed? I need explicit instructions on steps to take, because I am no expert.

From your description, it sounds like the iMac's internal drive has failed.


Going forward you have three options:


1) Have the internal drive replaced by your local AASP and then migrate from your backup.

2) Install macOS on an external drive or SSD and then migrate from your backup.

Use an external SSD as your startup disk … - Apple Community


3) Replace the old iMac with a new Mac and migrate from your backup.

Thank you for the reply. I have already tried what you suggest, but the disk utility does not find any error on any item shown in the left column of Disk Utility. Also, there is no icon shown in the UI where the disk or disks should be shown in the macOS Utilities screens. Consequently, I am unable to initiate any function that requires selection of a disk or disks.

Thank you so much for this. I was beginning to to think that it might be a fatal disk error. It's a two-hour drive to the nearest Apple Store for me, but that's what I am going to do. I especially like the suggestions and links you provided. I'm off to buy a new drive. I'll post back tonight or tomorrow after I have gotten back and tried #2. I recommend running from an external SSD, if you can't replace the iMac right now. If you can replace now, then I recommend replacing the iMac with a Mac mini and external display.


Thanks for the offer. My wife's grandparents were originally from the Crowell area and she hated going to Texas back in the 60's. These days and at our age, we prefer to stay in a nice place on the Calif. coast or on one of the Hawaiian Islands for a week.

Well, no luck so far. A five-hour roundtrip to get the SSD, then the first problem when I tried to erase it. The instructions in the link for #2 above said to use APFS format. But this iMac is booting into Sierra (I think it was) and APSF is not offered. So I chose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) instead. The network install is always the choice that runs, and it is very slow. I have tried it twice now, with reboot and disk utility in between. But each attempt ends with an error indicated and I had to start over. Should I use a different format or is the Mac version that is being loaded too old for those instructions to be valid? I think I'm going to see about ordering the mini and display if I can find enough change in the couch cushions. LOL...
