How do I stop my iPhone from automatically opening Messages app?

Ive noticed the last couple months that my iphone will automatically open iMessages. Mostly while I am using the phone. I click on the message app and notice I have several messages that have been opened but I did not open them. I’ve been running the latest updates and have tried closing the app, resetting the phone, turning read receipts off then back on.
