IPad and iPhone freeze When Trying To Access Music Player Via IP Address.

A bit of a strange one…I can access my Moode music player on a Raspberry Pi5 just fine on my Macbook, but for some reason, when I try to use both iPad or iPhone, I can see Moode, maybe be able to click on my music file, but then it freezes.

I've done the obvious - reboots, powered off the Pi, installed latest updates, made sure only one point of access is running,  tried different browsers, reset router etc. to no avail. It can't be to do with Moode because I'm able to access everything just fine on the Macbook, and on my wife's Google phone.

Any help & suggestions would be very welcome!

Assuming that you have full functionality with other computers, this would suggest a problem with your network connection - leaving two potential possibilities:

1) Your iPad's network settings, or

2) Your WiFi Router [perhaps counterintuitively] is dropping or filtering broadcast traffic between your iPad and the RPi.

If you have a VPN App or profiles installed, or a security/AV/firewall App (such as Norton, McAfee or similar), these may be interfering with your iPad's network stack. If applicable, the resolution is usually simple; if installed, you may only need to disable or remove the Security App and/or VPN.

If some Apps are working as expected, while others are not - or other devices are working as expected - you may find that a restart of your WiFi Router, followed by a restart of your iPad will clear the problem….

To restart your router, disconnect power from the router for at least 30 seconds - then reconnect power to restart. After your router reboots (which may take several minutes), force restart your iPad:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

If you continue to have difficulties, check to see if your iPad is using the WiFi Private Address feature. This feature is intended to provide additional privacy and security when using “public” (untrusted) WiFi networks.

Settings > WiFi > [Your WiFi Network / SSID] - tap the “i” icon - Private Address

The Private Address feature is largely unnecessary for your home WiFi network; if enabled, Private Addressing can cause issues if specific MAC addresses are expected by your WiFi Router. You may need to disable this feature - and can be enabled or disabled for each individual network.

Use private Wi-Fi addresses in iOS 14, iPadOS 14, and watchOS 7 - Apple Support

Also, check to see if your iPad is using Apple's Private Relay. If enabled, try disabling this feature:

Settings > [Your Name / Apple Account] > iCloud > [iCloud Features] Private Relay > Private Relay - set to OFF

Another thought, are you using a Content or Ad-blocking App with your iPad? If yes, you may need to explicitly white-list your RPi by URL or IP Address.

Have you considered seeking help from HiFiBerry? They may are more likely to be aware of issues with specific controlling devices.

Without access to the same hardware, it is impossible to replicate your difficulty.

What the problem was I couldn't say, but I have managed to overcome, rather than solve the issue.

I dug out another small external HD, formatted it FAT32, and transferred a handful of music files over. After updating the Pi's library, it then played just fine.I then copied all the music files to my big HD, reformatted my original SSD drive, then transferred all the files back. Bingo! It now works just fine. I can only think there was something corrupted on the ssd.

The IP Address alone means little without knowing the network protocol and/or port being used to connect to the Raspberry Pi.

How are you attempting to access this music? Are you using a specific App, a web browser, or something else? Perhaps your iPad has a VPN or other "security" App installed that is interfering with your connection to the RPi?

If you can provide more information, contributors here may be better able to provide appropriate guidance.

'm now back home, plugged the Pi in, set the wireless to a different router, same problem! My home Mac Mini works fine, so does my Macbook here, so does my Lenovo pad. iPad & iPhone don't. Now I know the iPad was working fine with this a few weeks ago because I'd set up a new HAT Hi-FiBerry Digi 2 Pro on the Pi5 here, using iPad on the wireless connection. This really doesn't make any sense to me.

If I run MoOde on, say, the Macbook, select a music file & play, Moode appears on the iPad with the album artwork appearing in the background. It lets me click on the USB music folder, then if I click again to access the album files, there's a delay of about five seconds (not when I'm using the other means) but then the whole lot freezes & I can't select anything. However, interestingly, it lets me select configure, and move between the various settings, select library etc., it just freezes when I'm trying to select the music files.

Thanks for your help. I'll try to answer your questions as best I can from my non-technical, older chap's knowledge.

I access my Moode player on the Pi via the Safari web browser (there's no dedicated app.) either with “ Moode.local” or using the I.P. Address I'd fixed in the BT router. I've tried using other browsers, Firefox, Google etc. with the same result. The frustrating thing is that, up until this week, the setup's worked perfectly for a year or so, using exactly the same hardware & everything else. My wife's Google phone, my Macbook, and the glacially-slow and ancient Acer pad thing also all work fine, although the latter's impractical to use.

The only difference can identify is the recent operating system update, but I've no idea why this should be an issue.

Many thanks for your continued help on this LotusPilot.

I've gone through all your suggestions, but none has an effect on the problem. No security, VPN, Private Address on or off, iCloud private relay set to off.

Since being home, we've tried my wife's two iPhones, her old iPad, & it's the same. Her works PC, my old Thinkpad PC, & her works Google phone all work just fine. This is definitely restricted to devices running Apple's iOS operating system., & it's something to do with accessing the SSD attached via USB to the Pi.
