Why is my iPhone XR running 18.4.1 display always dark?

Background of phone stays dark always can’t change to light. Display & brightness settings appearance is dark only.

Can't get my iphone 14 Pro Max (iOS 16.1.1) our of dark mode? The background on all my screens is black. I go to setting and switch to dark mode and the background on the setting turns black as expected along with everything else. I switch to light and only the settings screen backgrounds turn white. All the other screen backgrounds remain black. How do I fix this? I don't want the dark background.
