Yes, as everything generates heat. Yes even ice cubes do, how much is the question and how much is tolerable for your needs is the real question. You need to look over the technical specifications of the drives you are considering to determine if the heat generated is tolerable for your needs.
Yes all external HDD's and SSD's generate some heat.
