iPad Pro 5th gen fails to charge intermittently despite using Apple cords and direct electricity

April 26, 2025

iPad Pro 5th generation intermittently fails to charge. Sometimes goes without charging ability many hours & days, many attempts - using Apple charging cord and block. Even when plugged directly to electricity with cord that works just fine on other iPads. As Apple advised, I'm not attempting to charge by plugging into a hub or or gang outlet or computer; plugging straight to the wall outlet. Tried many Apple brand cords, blocks, different electric outlets.

This is a known defect with this iPad Pro 5th gen.

Apple support says of course use only Apple cords for charging, and...

  1. Reverse the cord- change the C end from the block to the iPad. Then plug into electricity again.
  2. Turn the plug around and plug it into the iPad, i.e. reverse the orientation.
  3. Try different cords and blocks.
  4. Unplug the charging cord, turn the iPad off. Then quickly tap volume up; then quickly tap volume down; then push and hold the button on the top left side to see if it goes on. Nope.
  5. Be sure the charging port is clean - blow it out with canned air.

Also tried this volume tap with the iPad on. Still does not charge.

Other ideas?

You might be best advised to seek assistance directly from Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where the technicians will be able to hand-on test and assess your iPad. Here you will be in the best possible place to explore your available options for repair or replacement:

I'm unaware of specific "issues" being attributed to the USB-C port of the 5th Generation iPad Pro - or for that matter, any model of iPad. Speaking of my own experience with two such iPads, in regular/heavy use, I have not experienced any issues at all.

Damage or failure of the USB-C port is usually attributable to rough handling when connecting or disconnecting the charging cable. It is essential that the plug is properly aligned and inserted; if any pressure is required, the plug is not properly aligned. Similarly, when disconnecting, always pull the USB-C plug (and not the cable) directly away from the iPad.

As for obtaining service for your iPad, be aware that an Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) may be much closer to you than an official Apple Store. As an alternative to using either, you might instead choose to use Apple's mail-in repair service.

Either way, for practical purposes and in lieu of repairing and returning your own iPad, Apple usually exchange the iPad for a renewed/refurbished iPad of the same model and specification. The cost of the exchange is the same as would otherwise be charged for repair. Unless you have benefit of an active AppleCare plan, an out-of-warranty repair while expensive will be somewhat less than the cost of a replacement iPad.

As for out-of-warranty repair costs, Apple offers a fixed-price price repair. You can verify eligibility and cost for your region/country here:

If you have an active AppleCare+ plan, the cost of repair is reduced to a small excess/deductible fee.

Thank you for responding. I had a long conversation with Apple support. This is a known problem with this iPad gen 5 ... and also with other iPads. Apple knows this, yet they put the onus on the iPad purchaser. I know I can go to a genius bar 3 1/2 hours drive from me. I know I can go to Best Buy for repair. I'm looking for any possible steps I might take on my own prior to spending another $500 (yes I was told the repair could be that costly) on this iPad that was $1,300.00 plus a few hundred for the Apple cantilever keyboard case.

Any ideas for steps I might at least try before spending more money on this very costly device?

Thanks!!
