I experience the same problem.

My work around solutions:

  1. Click Shift-CMD-Colon together (to activate the spelling check). Then the message is sent immediately, but without checking the spelling.
  2. In Mail settings: go to Composing and activate Check spelling: As I type. Then the spelling in the message can be checked by clicking Shift-CMD-Colon. This my preferred choice.

This is typically a bug that Apple should repair.

I have the same issue with my M1 MacBook Pro running Sequoia. After an exhausting “chat” my case was sent to the next level of Apple Tech Support. This mail problem is a known issue and Apple is working on a resolution. For now, try clicking on the SEND Icon and then hit “RETURN” after the last line in your email. The email should “send” then.

I had the same problem on M3 iMac (not replicated on MacBook Air). Apple Support advised disabling spell check before sending, until a fix is issued in next upgrade. This seemed to work, but Mail today failed to add a file by clicking the Attach button - and then when the file was attached by drag and drop, refused to send.

The work round suggested by leroydouglas - turning off the Undo send delay - resolved the attachment issue and also allowed spell check before sending.
