Airpod Max making crackling noise when in transparent mode and noise cancelling

Airpods Max, version 6F25 Model A2096 (2020), recently started making a deep thump/crackling sound when in any mode. The only time there is no interference is when noise control is off. I've reset the phone, tried multiple audios/apps and two devices for bluetooth origin.

AirPods 4 ANC Rumbling Noise On my AirPods 4 ANC, in noise cancellation mode instead of blocking out noise, it is pumping it in, also when this issue happens it increases the bass on the airpod that is doing it. The AirPod that is doing it switches, so it is not a hardware issue, I have reset but it still does it, they are updated, I have cleaned the mics, I don’t know what else to do. It is obviously very frustrating, I paid the extra $50 specifically for this feature and it’s not working.

This is even when no app audio is running - in fact it is more noticeable when nothing is playing, or during quiet speech etc. I notice there have been a number of other such questions about this but they do not get answered but referred to a much earlier issue with Airpod pros (1st gen) here, which is not the case: If your AirPods Pro (1st generation) make crackling or static sounds - Apple Support My airpods have done this from new - they are only a few weeks old. Do I have to return them to the Apple Centre?

Have you reset the AirPods themselves to see if the issues persist? You might want to try that
